Olympic Medalists Clayton Murphy and Nick Willis and World's Fastest Miler of 2018 Edward Cheserek to Headline NYRR Wanamaker Mile Men's Field at 112th NYRR Millrose Games on February 9

Signature event from The Armory’s New Balance Track and Field Center to be broadcast live on NBC

New York, January 9, 2019 — Olympic medalists Clayton Murphy and Nick Willis, along with the world’s fastest miler indoors or outdoors last year, Edward Cheserek, will headline the NYRR Wanamaker Mile men’s field at the 112th NYRR Millrose Games on Saturday, February 9 at The Armory’s New Balance Track and Field Center. The signature event at the NYRR Millrose Games has taken place every year on the men’s side since 1926 and was won last year by Chris O’Hare, and this year it will be broadcast live nationally on NBC for the third consecutive year.

“The NYRR Wanamaker Mile is revered as one of the world's greatest mile races and this year's men’s field in the 112th NYRR Millrose Games looks to be one of the best ever,” said NYRR Millrose Games Meet Director Ray Flynn.

Murphy, 23, of New Paris, OH, was the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials champion over 800 meters and won bronze in the distance at the Rio 2016 Olympics. The University of Akron graduate set a personal best in Rio, running 1:42.93 to become the third-fastest American in history. Murphy, who won two NCAA titles in 2016 and a Pan American title in 2015, finished second in a personal-best time in his NYRR Wanamaker Mile debut in 2017 and was fifth over 800 meters at last year’s NYRR Millrose Games.

“I am very excited to be back in New York and race the prestigious NYRR Wanamaker Mile,” Murphy said. “I’m sure the fans will be loud and cheering us on, and I am looking forward to putting on a show for everyone.”

Willis, 35, of New Zealand, finished as runner-up at the NYRR Wanamaker Mile three times (2009, 2015, 2016), was third twice (2008, 2014) and took fifth last year. As a four-time Olympian, the University of Michigan graduate and Ann Arbor, MI resident won the silver medal in the 1500 meters at the Beijing 2008 Games, carried New Zealand’s flag at the London 2012 Opening Ceremony, and returned to the podium with a bronze medal in the 1500 meters at the Rio 2016 Games. In 2017, he won a record-tying fourth men’s title at the 5th Avenue Mile, adding to his previous victories on Manhattan’s most famous thoroughfare from 2008, 2013, and 2015.

“I started my career as a big underdog, and now as a 35-year-old, I am embracing this mindset again as I return to the NYRR Millrose Games for my seventh attempt at the historic NYRR Wanamaker Mile title,” Willis said. “New York has been a second home for my racing career, having raced in the Big Apple over 25 times, so I can't wait to return once again to the familiar 'boards' of The Armory, coincidentally the first track I ever raced at on U.S. soil back in 2001.”

Cheserek, 24, of Kenya was a 17-time NCAA national champion at the University of Oregon who recorded the second fastest indoor mile in world history last year in 3:49.44 at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Cheserek attended high school at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J., and has a strong connection to the New York area, having raced at The Armory dozens of times. He’s now a U.S. resident, living in Flagstaff, AZ.

“The NYRR Millrose Games has been one of my favorite meets since high school,” Cheserek said. “I haven’t been back since college, and I’m excited to race the NYRR Wanamaker Mile there for the first time. I know I need to prepare well as it’s always a fast race.”

The NYRR Wanamaker Mile women’s field and rest of the men’s field will be announced later this month.

The NYRR Millrose Games highlights the year-round partnership between The Armory Foundation, which oversees the premier indoor track and field center in America, and New York Road Runners, the world’s largest community running organization.

Headlining the field is former Syracuse University standout Justyn Knight. Knight won the 2017 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship after finishing in the top four the previous two years, and went on to add another title on the track in the 5,000m. Fresh off their thrilling NCAA Cross Country Championship duel to the finish line last month in Madison, WI, Morgan McDonald and Grant Fisher will renew their rivalry at Millrose. The 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championship came down to a sprint finish between the two, with McDonald of the University of Wisconsin holding off Stanford University’s Fisher. McDonald is also the Australian champion in the 5,000m, while Fisher was one of the most accomplished high school athletes ever, winning Foot Locker Nationals twice and breaking four minutes in the mile. Fisher also won an NCAA championship on the track in 2017.

New York, New Jersey Olympians, World’s Top Sprinters Set to Clash at 112th NYRR Millrose Games

All eyes will be on Tori Bowie during the Women’s 60m dash at the 112th NYRR Millrose Games on February 9 at The Armory. Photo by John Nepolitan

NEW YORK, December 6, 2018 – Both the women’s 60m dash and 60m hurdles scheduled for the 112th NYRR Millrose Games on February 9th will feature several of the world’s fastest women in track & field, The Armory Foundationannounced today.

Tori Bowie is the headliner in the 60m, while local stars Nia Ali and Queen Harrison will both compete in the hurdles. It’s appropriate the swift trio will showcase their exceptional skills against highly-recognized sprinters and hurdlers on the world’s fastest indoor surface at The Armory’s New Balance Track & Field Center.

“I’m looking forward to once again run at the historic Millrose Games on February 9th at The Armory,” said Bowie, turning the attention away from her stiff competition.

Bowie is the defending world champion in the 100m, and won the silver medal in that event at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She also was a member of the American 4x100m relay teams that won Olympic gold in both Rio and London, making her one of the most decorated sprinters in recent history. Bowie placed second at last season’s NYRR Millrose Games, and certainly will have her eyes set on the top of the podium.

Meanwhile, several other women will look to challenge the World and Olympic champion, led by English Gardner. Gardner is the seventh fastest woman ever in the 100m, and she won an Olympic gold medal alongside Bowie on the 4x100m relay. A five-time NCAA champion while at the University of Oregon, Gardner currently coaches at Princeton University while maintaining her own athletic prowess on the track.

Deajah Stevens is another swift competitor to keep an eye on. Stevens, a local record holder who attended Benjamin Cardozo High School in Queens, qualified for the Rio Olympics and made the final in the 200m, ultimately placing seventh. An Armory regular, Stevens was a member of the 4x200m relay that set the American record at last year’s Dr. Sander Invitational. Also in the 60m field is up-and-coming star Ashley Henderson. The 22-year-old graduate of San Diego State University dipped under 11 seconds in the 100m for the first time this past summer, placing second at the USATF Outdoor Championships.

Turning to the hurdles, Nia Ali and Queen Harrison are two of the most accomplished athletes in track & field and their showdown promises to be a thriller. Ali is the reigning Olympic silver medalist in the 100m hurdles, and twice won the 60m hurdles at the World Indoor Championships. Meanwhile, Harrison has Olympic and World Championship experience in both the 100m and 400m hurdles, and she’s among the top 20 on the all-time list in the shorter event.

Both Ali and Harrison have roots in the New York City area, as Ali attended Pleasantville High School in New Jersey, and Harrison was born in New York’s Sullivan County. The Millrose Games showcases the best athletes in the world and celebrates the rich heritage of track and field in this region. Both Ali and Harrison exemplify that mission.

The Women’s 60m dash and 60m hurdles are two of many highly-anticipated events at the 112th NYRR Millrose Games. The men’s shot put will feature Olympic gold and silver medalists Ryan Crouser and Joe Kovacs respectively throwing from the center of The Armory track. Top athletes for both the men’s and women’s 800m were recently announced, including Clayton MurphyMichael SaruniAjeé Wilson and Natoya Goule. The night’s signature events are the prestigious NYRR Men’s and Women’s Wanamaker Mile.

Entry announcements will continue leading up to the February 9th event and high school and youth qualifiers are determined during the January 9th NYRR Millrose Games Trials at The Armory.

NEW YORK, November 26, 2018  The 112th NYRR Millrose Games are scheduled for Saturday, February 9th, and the Jack and Lewis Rudin Women’s 800m race promises to be one of the highlights of the meet. Four competitors from last year’s world record-setting race in the 4x800m relay are set to return to the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory.

Highlighting the field is local superstar Ajeé Wilson, the 2017 world championship bronze medalist, and the hero of the American relay team that set the 4x800m world record. Wilson is the outdoor American record holder in the 800m, with a personal best of 1:55.61. Wilson will certainly have her eyes set on claiming the indoor American 800m record as her own.

“I’m looking forward to a great race at Millrose,” said Wilson, of Neptune Township, N.J. “I know that it will be a tough race with the talent and strength of the other girls running.”

Victory will indeed not come easily for Wilson, as she will be challenged by Jamaican standout Natoya Goule. The Commonwealth Games bronze medalist had a tremendous 2018 season, running a Jamaican record of 1:56.15 at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco, a race where she bested Wilson. Goule will look to continue to establish herself as one of the best 800m runners in the world at Millrose.

Also in the field is Charlene Lipsey, who ran on the record-setting relay team, and is also Wilson’s training partner and the current indoor American record holder. Lipsey ran her record-setting time of 1:58.64 at Millrose in 2017, and built off that momentum to make the world championship final that summer, where she finished seventh. Another American name to look out for is 2018 breakout star Ce’Aira Brown. Brown ran a terrific third leg on the runner-up relay team at Millrose last year, and later went on to break two minutes for the first time, running 1:58.01 in Sweden.

The Rudin family has a long and distinguished history supporting the sport of running and New York City. During the 111th NYRR Millrose Games the Rudin family sponsored the women’s 4x800 relay which culminated in a world record.

“We are excited to again be a part of this iconic sporting event in New York City, the 112th NYRR Millrose Games at The Armory,” said Eric and Bill Rudin. “We believe the Jack & Lewis Rudin Women’s 800m in a few months will match the excitement of last February’s world-record breaking performance by a superb USA team.

“Our fathers were extremely devoted to New York City and the sport of running. What better way to add to their legacy than for their names to be associated with this prestigious indoor track & field meet.”

“The Armory is delighted to announce the continued generous support by The Rudin Family- New York City's First Family of Running, for the Jack and Lewis Rudin Women's 800m featuring many of the most renowned runners in the world, during the 2019 NYRR Millrose Games,” Armory Foundation Co-President Rita Finkel added.

The Jack & Lewis Rudin’s Women’s 800m is just one of many loaded events at the 112th NYRR Millrose Games, the most historic indoor track meet in the world. The men’s shot put will feature Olympic gold and silver medalists Ryan Crouser and Joe Kovacs throwing from the center of the track. NEW YORK, November 13, 2018– The men’s 800 meter event in the 112thNYRR Millrose Games will include the top middle distance runners in the world including the Olympic bronze medalist, the two fastest runners in NCAA history, and the reigning NCAA champion, The Armory Foundation announced today.

Headlining the 800m for the February 9thNYRR Millrose Games will be 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Clayton Murphy. While Murphy struggled with injuries following his breakthrough medal performance in Rio, he announced his return to form this past summer in London with a time of 1:43.12, his second fastest ever. Now fully healthy, the American looks to be considered the favorite for this race.

"The Millrose Games is really the most prestigious indoor meet in the world,” Murphy said. “It is always fun to compete there in front of a packed house. I'm really looking forward to claiming my first Millrose victory on February 9th."

Murphy will have plenty of competition, including from Michael Saruni, the former standout at UTEP. Saruni ran an NCAA record of 1:43.25 in April, following his victory at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Now in his first season as a professional runner, the Kenyan athlete hopes to take the next leap forward to become one of the best in the world, and he will have the chance to do just that at Millrose.

Three top Americans will look to challenge including Donavan Brazier, the former NCAA record holder. He ran a 1:43.55 as a freshman at Texas A&M in 2016, shattering Jim Ryun’s mark that stood for 50 years. Brazier has flashed his potential on numerous occasions, including when he finished second at Millrose in 2018.

Isaiah Harris, the 2018 NCAA Champion, is another athlete looking to make noise in his first season as a pro. The champion from Penn State knocked off Saruni during the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the win. Harris placed second at the USATF Outdoor Championships in consecutive years and represented the United States in the 2017 World Championships. Erik Sowinski, the experienced veteran and American record holder in the indoor 600m, will also be a strong contender.
