NEW YORK, December 22, 2020 – The Armory Foundation has decided after extensive consultations with health experts that, due to rising cases nationally of Covid-19, it is advisable to cancel the 114th Millrose Games, previously scheduled for February 13, 2021 at The Armory in New York City.
Elinor Purrier, Ajeé Wilson, Donavan Brazier blaze to American records during 113th NYRR Millrose Games at The Armory
NEW YORK, NY, February 8, 2020 – Elinor Purrier and Ajeé Wilson not only won their respective races Saturday during the 113th NYRR Millrose Games at The Armory New Balance Track & Field Center, but the two women also set American records on the “Fastest Track in the World.”
Purrier won the NYRR Wanamaker Mile with a blazing finish to pass defending champion Konstanze Klosterhalfen during the final lap, with a record time of 4:16.85.
“On the second to last lap, I started getting more confident,” said Purrier, a World Championships finalist in the 5,000m. “I was like, ‘I don’t feel totally out of it, I’m going to try to make a move.’”
“(About the record) I was just focused on competing, I wasn’t really listening to the splits at all. Honestly, I’m just trying to soak it in. It hasn’t really hit me yet.”
Purrier now owns the top American indoor mark that lasted since 1982 by Mary Decker with a 4:20.5.
The Women’s NYRR Wanamaker Mile included four national records: Purrier, Klosterhalfen (Germany, 4:17.26), Jemma Reekie (Great Britian, 4:17.88) and Gaabriela DeBues-Stafford (Canada, 4:19.73). And the top three runners through 1,500m established national marks en route to the exciting finish before a sold-out Armory.
“I’m still trying to grasp it,” Purrier said about being the new owner of the American indoor record. “My plan was to sit and go with the rabbit and I knew it was going to be a fast race. I just tried to make a move.”
Wilson added to her list of wins at The Armory, winning the Jack & Lewis Rudin Women’s 800m for a second year in a row.
The Armory fan favorite from Neptune, NJ broke her own American indoor record with a 1:58.29. She set the American indoor record during last year’s NYRR Millrose Games with a 1:58.60.
She had plenty of motivation to hold off Jamaica’s Natoya Goule’s 1:59.35.
“That’s the loudest I’ve ever heard the crowd,” said the Olympian Wilson afterward. “I had family and friends here that helped me run strong and I got the American record. Millrose is super special. As a high schooler I qualified for the Millrose Mile and that was 10 years ago.
She continued, “It just has that magic.”
Despite battling effects of a cold, Chris O’Hare captured his second Men’s NYRR Wanamaker Mile. O’Hare built a solid lead toward the end to finish with a 3:55.61, ahead of Olli Hoare of Australia and local product Rob Napolitano of HOKA NJ/NYTC with 3:56.47 and 3:56.56 times, respectively.
“Having two children, you’re in constant state of sickness,” said O’Hare, who won in 2018. “I knew Filip (Ingebrigsten) would be in the front and be super strong and super confident, so I knew he would be the one taking it and he was the one I was going to have to beat from the bell.
“I felt ready.”
Ingebrigsten finished seventh with a 3:56.99.
Donavan Brazier continued his success off his 2019 World Championships triumph in and American record season, with a victory in the NewYork-Presbyterian Invitational Men’s 800m.
Brazier rewrote his own American record in the 800m with a 1:44.22, breaking his previous mark set last year of 1:44.41. He took control of the race during the final lap en route to the victory.
“I’m starting to take indoors a little more seriously,” Brazier said. “This was the best field and this will give me more confidence and more reassurance that I’m not living off the experiences last year.”
While former Syracuse standout Justyn Knight was winning the Dr. Sander Men’s Invitational 3,000m with a 7:46.36, high school senior and national cross-country champion Nico Young of Newbury Park, Calif, set a new high school national mark of 7:56.97.
“This is what I came here to do,” Young said. “I definitely was really nervous before the race. I wanted to test my ability.”
The Jam Shakwi Men’s Shot Put included 2019 World champion Joe Kovacs and 2016 Rio Olympics gold medalist Ryan Crouser. Crouser, who lost to Kovacs by a mere centimeter in last year’s World Championships, won with a 72-9 ¾ throw over Kovacs’ 70-0 ¼.

World Athletics Heritage Plaque to Honor NYRR Millrose Games’ Wanamaker Mile to be Presented to The Armory Today
NEW YORK, NY, February 8, 2020 – USA Track & Field CEO Max Siegel and USATF COO Renee Washington will present the World Athletics Heritage Plaque to The Armory, recognizing the illustrious history of the NYRR Millrose Games and Wanamaker Mile.
Armory Foundation Co-Presidents Rita Finkel and Jonathan Schindel and New York Road Runners CEO Michael Capiraso will accept the award today during the 113th NYRR Millrose Games’ opening ceremony scheduled for 3:50 p.m.
“The Armory is the proud recipient of the World Athletics prestigious Heritage Award this year for the NYRR Millrose Games and the Wanamaker Mile,” Schindel said. “The World Athletics Heritage Plaque honors iconic and historic athletics competitions around the world, and The Armory is so pleased to be among such a select group of honorees.”
In December of 2018, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe introduced the idea and purpose behind World Athletics Heritage Plaque.
According to its website, the World Athletics Heritage “sets out to preserve the legacy of athletics, its heroes and heroines, their artefacts, and the documents, videos and photographs that portray them and in turn engage with and inspire the stars and fans of the present and future.
“Heritage will celebrate and forge connection across 3,000 years of our sport, telling athletics’ rich story, based upon a myriad of marvelous memories and moments which few other sports can match.”
Since its inception, there have been 54 World Athletics Heritage Plaques awarded, including the November 21, 2019 official ceremony to announce the Wanamaker Mile and five other distinguished track & field honorees.
Department store magnate Rodman Wanamaker started the Millrose Games and the Wanamaker Mile was named in his honor.
The Wanamaker Mile has been a fixture in track & field since it originated in 1926 at Madison Square Garden. It’s widely recognized as the signature and final event of each NYRR Millrose Games. In 2012, the NYRR Millrose Games moved from Madison Square Garden to Washington Heights, home to the renowned Armory New Balance Track & Field Center and its “Fastest Track in the World.”
Today, more than 200 athletes share the distinction of being both Millrose and Olympic champions. The 113th NYRR Millrose Games welcomes 29 Olympians competing before a NBC nationally-televised audience and a sold-out Armory. And, NYRR is the title sponsor of both the men’s and women’s Wanamaker Mile.
In 1926, James J. Connolly won the first Wanamaker Mile with a time of 4:17.2. Five-time Olympian Bernard Lagat holds the record for most Wanamaker Mile titles with eight, followed by Ireland’s Eamonn Coghlan, the Chairman of the Boards, with seven. Matt Centrowitz, who in 2016 won USA’s first gold medal in 108 years in the 1,500m at the Rio Olympics, owns three Wanamaker Mile titles.
Last year, Yomif Kejelcha set the Wanamaker Mile record with a 3:48.46 time and was 0.1 seconds from breaking the world indoor record for the mile.

NEW YORK, NY, February 4, 2020 – High anticipation transforms into reality this Saturday as the famed 113th NYRR Millrose Games takes place at The Armory New Balance Track & Field Center.
“I don’t think there is any other atmosphere in the entire world like the Millrose Games when it comes to track & field,” 800m World champion and American record-holder Donavan Brazier said. “That’s why I always come back. I love to go to New York – they do a great job putting on the meet for the high schoolers and the professionals as well.”
More than one outstanding signature event is earmarked for the 113th NYRR Millrose Games. Meet Director Ray Flynn points to 13 high-volume elite track & field events to stimulate deafening roars from a sold-out Armory.
Flynn, the two-time Irish Olympian and owner of 89 sub-4-minute miles, believes this 113th NYRR Millrose Games edition is on track to have an all-time assemblage of world-class talent.
“This year,” says Flynn, “could be one of the best ever.”
A sold-out Armory and an NBC nationally televised audience will witness such a memorable day of indoor track & field.
“I love competing there,” said Olympian and World champion sprinter Nia Ali, who went to high schools in nearby Philadelphia and New Jersey. “I grew up competing at The Armory and it’s like home to me. I know all the meet officials and everyone who works there. I know all the plaques on the wall.
“It’s home and it’s always cool to go back home and compete at The Armory.”
A special ambiance embraces the 113th edition of this meet, recognized as the world’s premier indoor track & field event.
Around the corner after the NYRR Millrose Games and Toyota USATF Indoor Championships are the Olympic Trials and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Elite athletes participating Saturday at The Armory understand it’s getting close to their Super Bowl, their World Series. The NYRR Millrose Games will hopefully catapult many of them to a summer to remember.
Following are Ray Flynn’s “baker dozen” of signature events at the 113th NYRR Millrose Games:
In the George Hirsch Men’s 60 Hurdles, new star and World champion Grant Holloway will go up against Olympic champion Omar McLeod from Jamaica and U.S. champion Daniel Roberts.
The Howard Schmertz Women’s 60m Hurdles will feature World Record holder Keni Harrison against World champion Nia Ali, who won in Boston last month, and NCAA champion Janeek Brown of Jamaica.
Who will soar higher in the New York Athletic Club Women’s Pole Vault, 2018 World Indoor champion and 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist Sandi Morris or fellow Olympian and four-time NCAA champion Lexi Jacobus?

In the Women’s 60m Dash, six-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix, the most decorated athlete in track & field, against current U.S. champion Teahna Daniels.
The most exciting event of the World Championships in Doha, Qatar featured an epic shot put battle between 2016 Rio Olympic champion Ryan Crouser and 2019 World champion Joe Kovacs. The world’s top two in the shot put again will perform on center stage in the infield at The Armory during the Jam Shakwi Men’s Shot Put.
